What Gambhir said about Kohli and Rohit

Speaking to reporters in his first press conference as head coach on Tuesday, Gambhir asserted that he wants Rohit and Kohli to be available for most games. "With Rohit and Virat are not playing T20 cricket, we only have two formats to look after. I'm sure they're going to be available for most of the games," Gambhir said. "They have shown what they can deliver on the big day...in the T20 World Cup, in the 50-overs World Cup as well," he added.

'Hardik Pandya will add value to Indian Test team; can play freely without captaincy responsibilities': Lalchand Rajput

Lalchand Rajput, who is currently coaching Jaguars at Canada Global T20, touches upon the recent developments in Indian cricket in a chat with Hindustan Times.

The last time Hardik Pandya played a red-ball match for India was back in 2018, during the tour of England. Since then, the Indian cricket team has experienced a captaincy shift and two changes in coaching staff. Hardik’s struggle with fitness has been a major factor in his absence from the Test arena, despite once being considered the next big thing in Indian cricket, following in the footsteps of former captain and all-rounder Kapil Dev.

Earlier this month, in a surprising move, Suryakumar Yadav was appointed as India’s T20I captain over Hardik Pandya, even though Hardik had served as Rohit Sharma’s deputy in the T20 World Cup just last month. The chairman of selectors, Ajit Agarkar, explained that the decision was based on the need for a captain who would be more consistently available. This decision has sparked discussions and debates within the cricket community.

Former Team India cricket manager Lalchand Rajput, however, believes that now is the perfect time to gradually reintroduce Hardik Pandya into the Test fold. With India gearing up for a busy Test season in August, featuring 10 matches, including home series against Bangladesh and New Zealand, and a challenging five-Test series in Australia, Rajput sees a valuable opportunity for Hardik. He suggests that Hardik's unique skills and potential can significantly bolster the Indian Test squad, provided he can maintain his fitness

Suryakumar Yadav taught 'limitation is not weakness' lesson by Ravi Shastri ahead of debut as India's full

Suryakumar Yadav received some crucial advice from former India head coach Ravi Shastri.

It's the dawn of a new era for SKY. In a few hours from now, Suryakumar Yadav, Rohit Sharma's successor, will make his debut as India’s full-time captain when the Men in Blue take on Sri Lanka in the first T20I in Dambulla. Suryakumar has captained India before in eight T20Is – including a T20I series win against Australia and a 1-1 draw against South Africa late last year, but in both of those instances, he was only stepping in for Hardik Pandya, who had captained India for the better part of the year but had failed to recover from the ankle injury he sustained in the World Cup.

Suryakumar Yadav will take a huge step in his career today as he begins his tenure as India's full-time T20I captain.(PTI)

Tonight promises to be different, and a day Surya will cherish for the rest of his life. It's his first match as India's official captain as he and the team management slowly look to build a squad for the 2026 T20 World Cup. There's still time before the next big ICC T20 event comes to India but the process, as a certain MS Dhoni always stressed on, begins now, with Surya at the helm. He has an able ally with him in Gautam Gambhir, whose presence promises to sooth some nerves if any.

But given the long road that lies ahead, Surya has received some crucial advice from his former India coach. Ravi Shastri, who knows a thing or two about coaching and the art of managing players, wants SKY to understand his bowlers and their deliverables well. He has the cushion of experienced batters, but barring Jasprit Bumrah and to a certain extent Arshdeep Singh, Shastri feels Surya needs to pay close attention to his bowlers going forward.

"One thing that he (Suryakumar) will have to learn from his side, is what are the strengths of his bowlers and what are the limitations. I never say a bowler has a weakness, I say a limitation and then there are strengths. And then focus on the right things and set fields accordingly. I think that's what he will have to learn," Shastri said on the ICC Review Show.

Gautam Gambhir hype extinguished after Sanjay Manjrekar's blunt 'it's not about coach' reminder ahead of 1st T20

Sanjay Manjrekar has urged the fans to take it easy as Gautam Gambhir is appointed the new head coach of the Indian team.

Sanjay Manjrekar has doused all the hype surrounding Gautam Gambhir as the two-time World Cup winner is all set for his first match as captain of the Indian cricket team. Gambhir, who replaced Rahul Dravid, has huge shoes to fill and while there's plenty of noise and expectations about the new coach's tenure, Manjrekar has urged the onlookers to take it easy. Reminding the fans, players and broadcasters with a not-so-subtle take, Manjrekar reiterated just who this game is all about – team over individual.

Manjrekar ensure that the pages of Indian cricket history are brushed through. The four times that India have won the World Cup, only twice did they have specialised coaches. Hence, the need of the hour, as Manjrekar points out, is to pay all the attention to the Indian cricket team as a whole, rather for individuals to channel all their energy on the newly-appointed Gambhir.

"No coach, Lalchand Rajput, Gary Kirsten & Dravid. Coaches when India won WCs in 1983, 2007, 2011 & 2023. It's really about Indian cricket, not who the coach is. Time we stop thinking there is a direct correlation," Manjrekar tweeted.

When Kapil Dev's daredevils lifted the Prudential World Cup – the third ever by stopping the West Indies juggernaut – India did it without a head coach. Team India then had to wait for 24 years to win their second World Cup when a young brigade under MS Dhoni defied all odds and emerged world champions in the first ever T20 World Cup in 2007. Six months prior, India endured a first-round exit in the 50-overs World Cup in West Indies, and as Greg Chappell was sacked from his position as head coach, India went to South Africa with Lalchand Rajput as the
